"Growing Herbs"

Growing herbs on a windowsill, a balcony or patio, or in a purpose designed full-on herb garden, is something everyone can enjoy the benefits of. Even if you can't encourage certain members of the family to water the plants from time to time, they may be interested in adding a touch of 'je ne sais quoi' to a family recipe!

Going back through the centuries, herbs have had great press and some pretty bad press along the way. However, all the myths and legends about herbs can now be examined scientifically which brings the whole subject into a much more manageable 'magic'.

There's no doubt that growing herbs at home will add a touch of magic to your life and your lifestyle. Many herbs are evergreen, perennial and will last for many years with a little TLC from time to time. The most important thing about growing herbs is actually to use them! All herbs benefit from being used, and picking leaves or stems will encourage more growth.

And it really doesn't matter whether or not you have a garden or even green fingers.. Container herb gardening is becoming an art form but is still a practical and attractive way to get the benefits of nature across to your family.

Growing Herbs - Benefits: Herbs stimulate our senses, and should be a part of everyone's life. They are becoming more and more accepted in the scientific medicinal world and many drugs are in fact based on herbs and plants anyway, and have been for years.

-Scent: Most herbs are strongly perfumed and a perfect herb to grow along walkways where they get brushed against from time to time. The scent also acts as a deterrent to the bad bugs in the vegetable garden. Grow herbs with your vegetable crops for greater protection for your crops. Also if they are growing with the veggies it's not so easy to forget to pick them!

-Taste: Well, that goes without saying but it's worth experimenting with a few different tastes. Basil is known as the tomato herb and does enhance the taste of tomatoes like no other herb perhaps, but basil can also be added to a green salad, or sprinkled over cheese on toast! Save some herbs for drying or freezing. Evergreens can be used all year round, but in cooler climates, many herbs won't survive the winter months outside.

-Sight: Herb plants are often very attractive, even when not flowering. Feathery leaves of coriander and variegated sage varieties will help create a stunning display in containers on a patio or a herb garden. Marigolds or pot marigold as the herb is often known, are vibrant orange flowers and brighten up borders and even window boxes.

-Sound: well, herb plants won't actually serenade you, but they will attract bees to your garden, and the lazy buzzing on a warm summer's day is soothing music to the ear.

-Feel: Cheating a bit here... This isn't really about touch but how you feel inside, and growing herbs will certainly plant some feel-good into your day. Many herbs can be taken as preventative medicines and will protect you from colds in the winter. Watercress is packed full of minerals and vitamins and will help build the immune system. Parsley contains huge amounts of folate, and will help prevent anaemia.

Growing herbs shouldn't be dismissed as something that gardeners do. They can be grown on a bright windowsill, on a balcony, a patio, or in the veggie patch if you prefer. And if you have the outdoor space available creating your own herb garden will keep everyone happily growing herbs for generations to come!
