"Garden Gnomes at Large!"

Garden gnomes traditionally trace back to German folklore. They were believed to be part of the underworld, and still are by those who tune in to that delightful other world stuff.

Their name derives from a Greek word meaning 'to learn and understand' and they represent a mellow and learned life living over 100 years.

The gnome doesn't worry and stress like humans, and the addition of one or two in the garden encourage a peaceful and relaxing environment.

In the 19th century, garden gnomes were manufactured in large quantities and were a popular addition to homes all over Germany. Towards the end of the century, they came to the UK and became almost as widespread as their German cousins!

When war in Europe broke out, they all but disappeared - businesses changed to accomodate war needs.

Nothing much happened until the 1960's when a flurry of plastic and poorly painted gnomes hit the market. Although they were plastic, rather than clay or ceramic, they were still bought, and the trend re-started.

By the 1990's there were over 5 million gnomes bought, but then it dropped again and sales have recently hit an all time low.
