Installing garden fountains isn't something to be taken too lightly, as certain criteria must be met. However, any water feature in your garden will create a tranquil mood and encourage wildlife.

Water features in your garden don't have to cost an arm and a leg. You can 'do it yourself', time permitting.

But apart from that, the cost can be kept right down. You could even 'puddle' clay to form a sealed pond. This does take some time but it is possible and worked well for centuries before plastic pond liners were invented! Simply trample and smooth the clay everyday for a while. Keep wet to avoid cracks - and leaks later on. The surface will eventually become 'plastic' and smooth as clay pots do. Don't let the surface dry out at all. - If you have no clay in your garden, the importing costs could be high though.

Still avoiding plastic, you could build a concrete based pond

Use stones and rocks to create a simple waterfall effect

Look for old or damaged statues in second hand shops, and patch them up. These 'ornaments' can help conceal the pipework and plumbing - necessary to keep your fountain flowing.

As well as pond plants, grow colourful flowers or climbing vines to enhance your water feature.

Embrace wildlife and have a few fish in the pond. They love the constant flowing water.
