"Daisies - The Flower of Innocence and Youth"

Lawn daisies arrive uninvited but always welcome. There are hundreds of varieties, the lawn variety being the most common. Children for centuries have collected them to make into chains or bouquets for special friends and they have many legends and myths attached to them.

They are supposed to represent all that is good and kind and as children are naturally drawn towards them, we have to consider this as being very feasible!

They have been used as a healing herb for many years and for many different ailments including:

cough
arthritis
rhumatism
headache
muscle pains
mouth ulcers

The flower essence is said to alleviate shock symptoms and calm the nervous system.

Collect a few and throw them in a warm bath, lie back and enjoy the healing powers!

Here's a pretty collection from Amazon (US)

Lawn varieties are incredible plants and will arrive on their own and establish their place in your garden with great strength over just a few years. Apart from cutting them down with a lawnmower or trampling them underfoot, there's very little that will disturb their growth.

Other varieties may take a little more looking after but overall it's a very hardy species of plant and every garden should show a few sunny blooms among the flower beds and borders. They are generally easy to grow and even beginner gardeners shouldn't have too much trouble.

Growing:

If you're growing from seed, read the instructions for your variety and your region on the back of the packet.

The ground should be prepared in advance - dig over, rake to a fairly fine tilth and remove all weeds and large stones and any other debris. The site should be well-drained and in a fairly sunny spot.

Caring:

Daisies really are a hardy plant and they tend to look after themselves fairly well. However, they won't like to be too dry or too wet. Make sure the soil isn't water logged and in times of very dry weather, water regularly. If you're unable to get to your garden for a few days and the weather is particularly dry, try mulching just after the last watering or rainfall and the soil should stay damp enough for the plants.

Happy Gardening!
