"Tips on Caring For Cut Flowers"

If you have the space to grow your own cut flowers, you can have fresh blooms brightening up your home almost every day of the year! Carnations and roses are favourite varieties as they tend to last longer after cutting.

But it's worth looking at other varieties, and there really are plenty to choose from.

A few things to consider when you are bringing flowers into the house:

- don't position your vase too near a radiator, or a cold draft.

- make sure all leaves are removed from the stem below the water level

- change the water every day to lengthen their shelf life!

Plan the growing as precisely as you can. Grab a few flower catalogues from garden centres or nurseries, and work out which blooms you like best. Consider:

- colours
- scent
- space

and most of all work out which month your flowers will bloom. Different flowers bloom in different months and with a little careful planning, you can have cut flowers throughout the year.

Some blooms are naturally long-stemmed and others are shorter. Some varieties could be grown specifically to enhance a particular vase or special pot you have.

How about gathering a fresh bouquet for a friend just to make her day. Somehow, it always seems to be more meaningful when you've created the gift yourself.

Is there a family wedding or other celebration due? Could you grow enough blue flowers, or pink ones to decorate the house so you can save money at the florists - and show off your expertise in the garden! Or how about growing all the buttonholes? Maybe a colourful collection of carnations. Find out more about growing carnations on this page... Growing Carnations

There are many small-holders and farmers who supplement their income with cut flowers at certain times of the year. Is there a gap in the market in your area? You may be able to earn a substantial living doing something you adore!
