"Child Gardening Tools
and accessories"

Finding child gardening tools isn't always as straight forward as it should be.

Check with your local garden centre, and if they haven't any children's gardening products, ask them why not!

There are a couple of good suppliers online...

For UK deliveries of children's ( and adults ) gardening tools try Crocus UK

Child Gardening Tools UK From homepage: click on 'garden tools and products' - then 'Tools' - then 'children's tools'

For US deliveries, Amazon have a colourful range of children's gardening tools.

Garden Tools

Potting Table for Kids

The gardening industry doesn't promote children's gardening as much as it could. It would be nice if some of the larger companies encouraged kids into their gardens and outdoor spaces a lot more. It's very easy to get hold of a super de luxe climbing frame with baby swing attachments, wallet permitting. But try and buy a children's fork and rake and the salesman will look at you as if you've given birth to aliens.

Gardening does need the use of tools and children should be supervised at all times in the garden. However, gardening with children is premium quality time, and is a pleasure parents shouldn't deny themselves. The simple joys of insects buzzing, the growing of the plants and the idle chatting we indulge in when relaxed is simply wonderful with the kids!

Look for child gardening tools in old-fashioned corner shops, garden centres and hardware stores. If it's possible, take them out of the packaging and test for strength. It's very important that tools, especially the larger tools, are strong enough to take the weight of a child pushing down on the handle, as he or she digs the earth. A very brittle wooden handle could splinter for example and cause a nasty accident. Child gardening tools you buy must be of the same quality as adult gardening tools. Always.

Which Tools should you buy?:

A full basic set of tools for a child who is seriously getting into gardening would be:

A Spade and Fork set

A rake and wheelbarrow

A hand trowel and fork set

If your child is helping you plant out seedlings or small plants, then a hand trowel and fork will be all you need to buy.

If you have lots of lawn, or plenty of trees, a rake and a wheelbarrow will be a great help in the garden along with a small helper of course :-)

And a spade and fork set will help the older child with the heavier garden work.

Tinies will enjoy playing with plastic wheelbarrows, buckets and spades, and it's surprising how quickly they learn!

Small scale stuff is always cute and child gardening tools are a pleasure to have around!

Happy Gardening!
