Cherry Tree - a present from the birds I think!

by Julie Scally
(Romford, Essex)

I noticed in my border about 2/3 years ago a plant growing that I know I had not planted. I carried on gardening around it, keeping an eye to see what else would materialise.

Last year, it obviously got a little bigger and thought it must be the start of some kind of tree. I looked up in my neighbour's garden who has a lovely pear tree that overhangs slightly in my garden and decided it must be one of those. But from looking at the leaves, this was not so. My neighbour has another tree situated next to the pear with a slightly different leaf that I now know to be a cherry. I'm sure that this is what is now growing in my garden. I was quite excited about this as I had wanted to get a tree for the garden for some time but couldn't make up my mind.

We moved into our house nearly 10 years ago now, it was actually a blank canvas - the garden was laid to lawn with a small patio at the back of the house. I couldn't wait to put some plants and flowers in the garden and started with a couple of borders to the right of the garden. This was gradually extended down the whole right side with a curved edge. I then made a small border on the left side in front of the patio. I had a small conifer, hebe and eunonymous that had overgrown in a pot at the front of the house which I decided to plant in the left border - they are amazing now. The following year I extended the left side to match the right side of the garden by making a big figure eight shaped lawn. After further planting over the years, the garden is nicely established - of course, there is always room for improvement and have been disappointed when a particular plant I like that has been newly planted has not taken for some reason or another - trial and error!

I have now decided that my new plant/tree must be a cherry tree because it is exactly the same as my neighbours. A present from the birds no doubt, which I'm really pleased about except I wish it was on the left side of the garden where I always thought I would plant a tree myself. The only problem being is that although it looks lovely growing in my border (it is now about 3 feet high), it is situated in front of a jasmine climber that has really established itself on the fence now. Would this look funny when the cherry tree has grown as high as the fence or more? Of course, this would also mean that the shrubs/plants in this border would eventually be in the shade - I'll have to check my book. Or do I move it to the left side of the garden where I wanted a tree in the first place? Although the designated area is going to become a small veg patch now as it's the only space available since my husband has built a 20 x 15 ft summer house at the bottom of the garden. Now that's another story even though I am proud of him!

Decisions, decisions.......
